Addressing the Challenges of Food Traceability with Information Logistics

Petter Olsen, senior scientist at the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (Nofima), explains the importance of information logistics within the field of food traceability and how processes can be implemented by both small and large businesses.  With consumers more interested than ever in information about food, it is important that companies involved in food production can keep track of it – from the origin of raw ingredients and the properties of the product, to where the final products end up. Petter Olsen is senior scientist at Nofima where he has been employed since 1993. He works with applications of ICT in the food industry, especially related to information logistics, product documentation, environmental accounting and traceability. Petter was the convener for the working groups that developed ISO 12875, ISO 12877 (seafood traceability) and CWA 16960 (self-assessment and documentation of sustainability), and a lot of his work has been related to development of methods and standards for electronic data interchange, process mapping and documentation of sustainability. Dr. Olsen works mostly with and in EU projects; he coordinated TraceFish in the 5th Framework Programme (traceability) and WhiteFish in the 7th Framework Programme (sustainability), and he had key roles in the projects TRACE, FoodIntegrity and Authent-Net (authentication of food properties), EcoFishMan and MareFrame (decision support for fisheries management), PrimeFish (seafood economics) and ClimeFish (climate effects on seafood production). He is also responsible for overseeing all Nofima participation in international projects.
