What Makes Opioids So Addictive?

Anyone prescribed with opioids for pain management is at risk for opioid addiction. Intrigued by why humans exhibit self-administering behavior with drugs, especially given the high health risks, Dr. Francesco Leri set out to study what defines addiction. By working with animal models, the Leri lab explores the effects of opioid addiction on learning and memory.

Dr. Francesco Leri's expertise is in behavioral pharmacology and neuroscience. His lab investigates psychological and neuropharmacological mechanisms involved in the development, persistence, and recurrence of behaviors reinforced by chemical (cocaine, heroin, oxycodone) and natural (monosaccharides and disaccharides) rewards.
